Holocaust Remembrance Week Survey

Date:  January 25, 2024
Subject: Holocaust Remembrance Week Survey
Category: Informational/Legislative requirements
Next Steps:  Ensure campus principals complete the required Texas Remembrance Week Survey

Overview

This week, January 22–26, 2024, is Holocaust Remembrance Week in Texas public schools. Texas Education Code, §29.9072, requires public schools to provide age-appropriate instruction on the Holocaust each year during the designated week. Next Monday, the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission (THGAAC) and TEA will distribute a required survey about implementation of Holocaust Remembrance Week to all K-12 campus principals.

Requirements for Holocaust Remembrance Week Survey

House Bill 3466 (88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2023), which was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott last year, requires the THGAAC, in collaboration with TEA, to survey all public schools about implementation of Holocaust Remembrance Week. The survey will include questions about awareness, activities, and support and will take just a few minutes to complete. The THGAAC will publish its findings in a report to the Texas Legislature later this year and use the report to develop recommendations to increase the impact of Holocaust Remembrance Week.

School System Participation

Participation in the survey is required under state law (Texas Education Code, §29.90725) and is also vital to continually improve Holocaust education throughout the State of Texas.

Next week each campus principal will receive an email from TEA with a link to the required survey. Please make sure each principal responds to the survey or designates an appropriate staff member in their school to complete this survey no later than February 16, 2024. Only one survey response per campus should be submitted.
