Effective May 28, 2012, the compensation cap for Independent Hearing Examiners who hold employment hearings under Texas Education Code, Chapter 21, subchapter F has been increased from $8,000 per case to $10,000 per case. In addition, the Commissioner has adopted amendments to subchapters AA, BB, and CC of 19 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 157, Hearings and Appeals, that include clarifying the requirements for motions requiring a certificate of conference, clarifying hearings procedures regarding federal programs and updating federal statutory references, and adding procedures regarding the issuance of subpoenas and depositions.

Nominations are being accepted until May 31 for two State Board of Education volunteer recognition programs. The Heroes for Children award recognizes outstanding volunteers who have given generously of their time to Texas schools. The Employers for Education Excellence program recognizes Texas employers who encourage and support staff participation and voluntarism in the public schools. Any Texas employer is eligible to win the award, including private companies, nonprofit organizations, and state, local, federal and educational entities.

Texas students in every major ethnic group significantly outscored their peers nationally on the eighth grade National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science test, with the state’s African-American students earning the fourth highest score in the country compared to other African-American students.

Texas Commissioner of Education Robert Scott announced today that he will resign his office, effective July 2 on the fifth anniversary of his appointment to the state’s highest public education post.
