Becoming a School Counselor, School Librarian, Educational Diagnostician, Reading Specialist or Master Teacher in Texas

School Counselor, School Librarian, Educational Diagnostician, or Reading Specialist

To become a school counselor, school librarian, educational diagnostician, or reading specialist, you must enroll in and complete an Approved Educator Preparation Program. Contact the approved program of your choice to find out the specific requirements for that program.

To be eligible to receive the Standard School Counselor, School Librarian, Educational Diagnostician or Reading Specialist Certificate, you must:

Master Teacher (Reading, Mathematics, Technology, Science)

To become a master teacher, you must enroll in and complete an Approved Educator Preparation Program. Contact the approved program of your choice to find out the specific requirements for that program.

To be eligible for a Master Reading Teacher Certificate, you must:

  • hold a Texas reading specialist certificate and satisfactorily complete a course of instruction in accordance with the Texas Administrative Code through an approved educator preparation program;

OR

  • hold a Texas teaching certificate;
  • have at least three years of teaching experience;
  • satisfactorily complete a knowledge-based and skills-based course of instruction through an approved educator preparation program on the science of teaching children to read;
  • satisfactorily complete a field-based practicum prescribed by an approved educator preparation program; 
  • perform satisfactorily on the master reading teacher certification examination;
  • satisfy any other applicable requirement for the certificate.

To be eligible for a Master Mathematics Teacher Certificate, you must:

  • hold a Texas teaching certificate;have at least three years of teaching experience;
  • satisfactorily complete a knowledge-based course of instruction through an approved educator preparation program on the science of teaching children mathematics; 
  • satisfactorily complete a field-based practicum prescribed by an approved educator preparation program; 
  • perform satisfactorily on the appropriate master mathematics teacher certification examination;
  • satisfy any other applicable requirement for the certificate.  

To be eligible for a Master Technology Teacher Certificate, you must: 

  • hold a Texas technology applications or technology education certificate;
  • satisfactorily complete the course of instruction as prescribed through an approved educator preparation program;
  • satisfactorily perform on the certification examination;
  • satisfactorily complete a field-based practicum prescribed by an approved educator preparation program; satisfy any other applicable requirement for the certificate;

OR

  • hold a Texas teaching certificate;
  • have at least three years of teaching experience;
  • satisfactorily complete a knowledge-based and skills-based course of instruction on interdisciplinary technology applications and the science of teaching technology through an approved educator preparation program;
  • satisfactorily complete a field-based practicum prescribed by an approved educator preparation program;
  • satisfactorily perform on an examination developed in cooperation with the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board and administered at the conclusion of the course of instruction;
  • satisfy any other applicable requirement for the certificate.

To be eligible for a Master Science Teacher Certificate, you must: 

  • hold a Texas teaching certificate;
  • have at least three years of teaching experience;
  • satisfactorily complete a knowledge-based course of instruction through an approved educator preparation program on the science of teaching children science; 
  • satisfactorily complete a field-based practicum prescribed by an approved educator preparation program;
  • perform satisfactorily on the appropriate master science teacher certification examination;
  • satisfy any other applicable requirement for the certificate.

TEA announces initial assessment requirements under HB 5

Passing rates on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) end-of-course tests were largely stable during the second year of this program, with students faring the best on science assessments and continuing to struggle with writing, according to statewide results for all 2012-13 STAAR tests released today by the Texas Education Agency.
