Atlanta Elementary School BLAST!

Atlanta Elementary School Cabbage Patch

Atlanta Elementary School BLAST! 3rd graders showed their home gardening skills as part of the Bonnie Plants cabbage growing program. Each year, Bonnie Plant Farm, an Alabama based nursery, delivers hundreds of thousands of hybrid “60-pound head” cabbage plants to rd graders across the United States. Stan Cope of Bonnie says, “We at Bonnie Plants want to share our love of gardening.”

This was Atlanta Elementary’s first year to participate in the program with 133 students receiving a cabbage plant in March. Students were instructed how to plant and care for their cabbage through the late chill of spring and into the early heat of summer.

As part of the program, Bonnie Plants gives a $1,000 award to one student in each state. A panel at Texas A&M will make the Texas selection and award a $1000.00 A&M scholarship to this year’s winner.

The Atlanta Elementary School BLAST! is a 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program.
