College Readiness Initiative for Middle School Students




The College Readiness Initiative for Middle School Students (CRIMSS) prepares 7th and 8th grade middle school students to be successful on the Algebra I and English I EOC exams and eventually meet the college readiness performance standards on the English III and Algebra II EOC exams.

 CRIMSS provides 7th and 8th grade mathematics and English teachers with the increased content knowledge and use of effective instructional strategies designed to increase college readiness for all students.

 CRIMSS fosters a college-going culture and prepares students for rigorous high school and postsecondary studies.


School districts and open enrollment charters are eligible and were ranked for funding purposes based on the average difference between the percentages of students who Met Standard and were Commended on the Reading and Mathematics TAKS in grades 7 and 8.

Grantees were required to complete a needs assessment regarding the campus’s instructional environment, student progress, and educator capacity and then create a campus plan to address identified issues.

Grantees were required to enter into an MOU with an approved service provider they selected to assist the campus in the implementation of the campus plan.


A final evaluation progress report from each grantee was submitted to TEA in September 2012.

Funding Information

  • No new funds appropriated in the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 biennium.
  • Grant period funding (October 1, 2010 – August 31, 2012): $14,137,350
  • $350 per student allocation, with a minimum funding amount of $50,000 and a maximum funding amount per campus of $150,000
  • Grantee funding is based on the 2009 PEIMS fall enrollment for grades 7 and 8.  


  • Grants were issued to 77 districts serving 112 campuses
  • Grantees were required to contract with one or more of the following Approved Service Providers:
    • America’s Choice
    • AVID Center
    •  Editure Professional Development, Inc.
    • Education Service Center 20
    • Johns Hopkins University – Talent Development
    • Laying the Foundation
    • Princeton Review
    •  SREB – Making Middle Grades Work
    •  SureScore 
    • The College Board
