Limited English Proficient (LEP) Student Success Initiative (SSI) Teacher Training Resources


Projects and Funding Information

The following teacher training projects and resources, developed under the LEP Student Success Initiative, address specific needs regarding the instruction of English language learners. The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at the University of Texas at Austin, the LEP Technical Assistance and Support Center, serves as the lead project coordinator to ensure statewide coordination of resources and training.

Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT) Online Writing Prep Course - $500,000

Texas A&M University – College Station

  • Design and administer an online prep course for the writing component of the Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test

ELL Web Portal - $400,000

ESC Region 13

  • Interactive web portal with information for administrators, teachers and parents

English Language Proficiency Standard Trainings - $60,000

ESC Region 20

  • Provide trainings on the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)

Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) Framework Trainings – $300,000

ESC Region 20

  • Build capacity for ESCs to train districts on developing and operating required Language Proficiency Assessment Committees

Limited English Proficient (LEP) Technical Assistance and Support Center - $1,850,000

Texas Institute for the Acquisition of Language for Learning at the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at the University of Texas at Austin

  • Provide support, including technical assistance and professional development to the Limited English Proficient Student Success Initiative (LEPSSI) Cycle 5 Grantees

Newcomer Resource Project - $600,000

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi

  • Develop a blueprint on the characteristics of an effective newcomer program

Online Bilingual/ESL Certification Prep Courses - $500,000

Texas A&M University – College Station

  • Continue development and enhancements of online prep courses for bilingual/ESL certification

Prekindergarten Dual Language Instruction - $1,450,000

University of Texas Health Science Center – Children’s Learning Institute

  • Expand the availability of prekindergarten dual language materials and resources using the Texas School Ready (TSR!) model to programs statewide

Program Model Characteristics - $1,125,000

  • Develop instructional designs for teachers and administrators that will delineate the four bilingual education program models and two ESL program models

Project LUCHA (Language Learners at The University of Texas at Austin Center for Hispanic Achievement) - $500,000

  • Provide transcript analysis and online content courses in both English and Spanish for English Language Learners (ELLs) in secondary schools

Science and Technology for English Language Learners Achieving Results in Science (STELLAR) - $1,500,000

Texas State University

  • Statewide professional development on science teacher training resources

Secondary ESL Institutes - $500,000

ESC Region 20

  • Professional development for middle and high school teachers on effective pedagogies and instructional intervention strategies

Social Studies for English Language Learners (ELLs) – $200,000

University of Texas Pan-American

  • Provide professional development that enhances social studies comprehension, abilities, attitudes, and practices for teachers serving LEP students in middle and high school

Teacher Mentoring Institutes - $500,000

  • Professional development for new Bilingual/ESL teachers in grades PK-12
