Prior Written Notice

Provision of Prior Written Notice to Parents of Students with Disabilities and to Adult Students with Disabilities

One of the greatest challenges currently facing Texas in regard to the delivery of services for students with disabilities is the prevalence of inconsistent and inaccurate information. A frequently-asked-questions document has been created to provide information and guidance to parents, district staff, and other interested stakeholders with regard to prior written notice.

Additionally, the issue is addressed in an August 15, 2008, letter from the United States Department of Education to Lieberman, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Information regarding prior written notice can also be found at The Legal Framework for the Child-Centered Special Education Process.

Technical Assistance

Education Service Centers
Texas is divided into 20 geographic regions. Each regional ESC will provide leadership, training, and technical assistance in the area of special education for students with disabilities in accordance with the Texas Education Agency's focus on increasing student achievement. Each regional ESC will continue to serve as first point of contact for school districts, parents, and other community stakeholders.

Parent Training and Information Centers
Parent centers in each state provide training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and young adults with disabilities and the professionals who work with their families. This assistance helps parents participate more effectively with professionals in meeting the educational needs of children and youth with disabilities.
