Revalidating a Lifetime Certificate

House Bill 72, passed by the Texas Legislature in 1984, mandated that all persons issued valid Texas teacher certifications prior to February 1, 1986 pass the Texas Examination of the Current Administrators and Teachers (TECAT) to continue their certification. In lieu of the TECAT, which was eliminated in June of 2000, an educator must pass the reading and writing portions of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to revalidate lifetime certificates. An educator may also choose to take any Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) or the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) content examination to revalidate a provisional or professional certificate.

Option 1: Revalidating using the THEA

If you decide to take the THEA, please know that there are three components to this examination: reading, writing, and math, you need to take only the reading and writing portions. You may register for this exam at www.thea.nesinc.com.

Once you successfully complete the test and you receive your official score report you will need to contact educator certification after you have completed the test. We will then verify the test results and revalidate your certificate. Please be advised that the THEA scores will not be displayed in your examination history, but documentation that you have passed this test will be place in your file.

Option 2: Revalidating using the ExCET or TExES

Another option for revalidation is to pass the ExCET or TExES examination in another content area. You may register for an exam by first creating an online account on our website, accessing your TEA ID number from your account then going to the testing company's website, www.texes.ets.org to set up an account and register for the test. Once you successfully complete the test and your scores are in your TEA account you will need to contact educator certification, we will then verify the test results and revalidate your certificate.

After you have completed the test and your certificate has been revalidated, you may be eligible for new certification and will need to apply for the additional certification and pay $77 to add the new area to your certificate.
