Dyslexia Requirements for Educator Preparation Programs
Educator Preparation Programs (EPP) Curriculum Information
All university candidates completing an EPP program must receive instruction in detection and education of students with dyslexia as required the Texas Administrative Code (TAC) [TAC RULE §228.35 (4)]
- Experts in the diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia
- Employed by institutions of higher education
- Approved by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
- Their mission statement:
- Our purpose is to provide all Texas students with an equitable education by increasing understanding of dyslexia through education and teacher preparation.
- Their goals are:
- Communicate our mission to stakeholders (keep in mind the questions; "Where are Texas students in the mission and subsequent goals?")
- Collaborate with lawmakers to support SB 866 as rules and policies are written
- Identify stakeholders/audience
- Determine technology to deliver content to audience
- Begin communication with Education Testing Service (ETS) regarding Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) exam to include content specified by SB 866
- Create timeline for goals in relation to SB 866 rules and policies
Curriculum must include:
- Characteristics of dyslexia
- Identification of dyslexia
- Effective, multisensory strategies for teaching students with dyslexia
