Members of the media and the general public can submit an public information request for any Texas Education Agency (TEA) record that is subject to the Public Information Act (PIA). Information subject to the act includes any data that is collected, assembled, or maintained by or for the agency in connection with the transaction of official business.
Submitting a Request
Before you submit a Public Information Request, please check to see if the information you need is available on the TEA website or through one of the contacts listed in the Other Information Sources section below.
To submit a PIR, use TEA's Online Request Form, which sends requests directly to the designated PIR email address. Please be specific and concise. Include date ranges if possible.

Some of our records contain confidential information and cannot be disclosed. Some examples are:
- Information that may identify a student (unless you have a right of access)
- Social Security Numbers of a living person
- Credit reports, access codes, account numbers
- Personal e-mail addresses of members of the public
- Certain financial or medical information
- Home addresses, phone numbers, and family member information of government employees
- Certain trade secret or proprietary information submitted by companies
Other information that may not be released includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Privileged attorney-client communications
- Information relating to pending or anticipated litigation, audits, and investigations
- Inter-agency communications consisting of advice, opinion, or recommendations on policy-making matters of the agency
Student record request require the submission of a consent form (Word, 95 KB), pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
There are certain types of information TEA does not maintain:
- TEA does not have student diplomas.
- TEA does not have student transcripts.
- TEA does not have summer school or correspondence course attendance information.
TEA does have:
- Confirmation of Texas high school graduation.
- Student course information for Grades 9-12 and only for regular fall and spring semesters.
- A list of Texas high school courses student attended for regular fall and spring semesters.
NOTE: Only student information from 1990-1991 to the present is available.
