    Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN)

The Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) was established by the Texas Legislature in 2007 to provide Texas students with equitable access to quality, online courses. Since its inception in January 2009, the TxVSN has provided Texas students and schools with a valuable avenue for interactive, collaborative, instructor-led online courses taught by state certified and appropriately credentialed teachers.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) offers state-supported online learning opportunities to students across the state through the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) using a network approach that works in partnership with districts. TEA, under the leadership of the commissioner of education, administers the TxVSN, sets standards for and approves TxVSN courses and professional development for online teachers, and has fiscal responsibility for the network. Education Service Center (ESC) Region 10 serves as central operations for the TxVSN, oversees the day-to-day operations of the network, and conducts the review of courses submitted for inclusion in the TxVSN.

The TxVSN is made up of two components—the TxVSN statewide course catalog and the TxVSN online schools program.

New Commissioner’s Rules for the Texas Virtual School Network

The new 19 TAC Chapter 70, Technology-Based Instruction, Subchapter AA, Commissioner's Rules Concerning the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN), has been adopted under the commissioner's rulemaking authority and is effective beginning February 27, 2013. The new rules provide guidance for school districts, charter schools, and other entities participating in the TxVSN, in accordance with the Texas Education Code (TEC), Chapter 30A. Rule text is available at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index4.aspx?id=2390.

    TxVSN Statewide Course Catalog

The TxVSN statewide course catalog provides supplemental online courses for high school graduation to students in grades 8-12. The TxVSN statewide course catalog offers students across the state opportunities to enroll in high school, Advanced Placement, and dual credit courses provided by eligible Texas school districts, open-enrollment charter schools, education service centers, and public or private institutions of higher education. To view courses available through the TxVSN statewide course catalog, visit the online course catalog. To learn more about the TxVSN statewide course catalog, visit www.txvsn.org.

    TxVSN Online Schools Program

The TxVSN Online Schools Program (OLS) offers full-time virtual instruction through eligible public schools to Texas public school students in grades 3-12. Instruction provided through the TxVSN OLS is 100 percent virtual and students participating in the program are not required to be physically present on campus during instruction.

    TxVSN Courses

All courses offered through the TxVSN must meet the state curriculum requirements, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS, and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) National Standards of Quality for Online Courses. TxVSN courses are taught by teachers who are Texas-certified in the content area and grade level of the course or meet the credentialing requirements of the associated institution of higher education and are trained in best practices in delivering online instruction. Students are not required to be physically present at school during instruction of TxVSN courses.
