Temporary Teacher Certificate - Candidate Information
The Temporary Teacher Certificate (TTC) provides an additional certification route for persons who hold a bachelor's degree or higher to enter the teaching profession. Persons requesting a TTC must be employed by an approved Texas school district for the two-year validity period of the certificate. The school district will assume the responsibility of training the individual for the validity period of the certificate. The TTC rule is found in the Texas Administrative Code.
There are not any school districts participating in the Temporary Teacher Certification (TTC) program at this time. Instead of applying for the TTC, please contact an approved educator preparation program for certification information.
Candidate Application Requirements
- Employment in an approved Texas school district.
- Baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Academic major or interdisciplinary academic major, including reading (other than education) that is related to at least one area of Texas public school curriculum and related to the current 8-12 certificate structure.
- A Temporary Teacher Certificate can only be issued for grades 8-12 in curriculum areas that currently have an exam under the Texas Examination for Educator Standards (TExES) program.
- Passing scores on 8-12 Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) TExES and on the appropriate 8-12 TExES content exam.
- Undergo a national criminal background check by submitting fingerprints for review.
- Candidates who already hold a temporary credential issued by SBEC (including a permit or probationary) may obtain a Temporary Teacher Certificate as long as they have not held one or any combination of the credentials listed above for more than one school year.
Candidate Responsibilities
STEP ONE
- Candidates must apply online for a Review of Transcripts. To apply, select “Educator Login” to set up an online account. Once logged in, click on the “Applications” menu button on the left-hand side of the screen and choose the “Temporary Teacher Certificate” menu button. Follow the instructions provided regarding the submission of fees and required documents.
- The fee for the review of transcripts is $180 and is non-refundable. The Review of transcripts will determine the content area the candidate's academic major is related to, the target certificate, and which 8-12 content exam the candidate must take in addition to the 8-12 PPR exam.
- Candidates must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities showing completion of the degree and academic major. If you earned your degree in a country other than the United States, you must submit an original, course-by-course evaluation for professional licensing of all college-level credits prepared by a credential evaluation service recognized by TEA. The evaluation must be signed by an authorized representative of the evaluation service and must verify that you hold the equivalent of a bachelor's degree granted by an accredited institution of higher education in the United States, including the month, day, and year that the degree was conferred.
- Submit an online application for the Temporary Teacher Certificate. To apply, login to your account and follow the instructions for the Temporary Teacher Certificate application. The fee is $52 and is refundable should it be found that the candidate does not possess a degree related to the 8-12 certificate structure or if the candidate does not find employment with an approved Texas school district. As a part of the application process a fingerprint packet will be mailed to the candidate for completion.
- Pay the nonrefundable fingerprint fee, undergo a national criminal background check by submitting fingerprints for review. Additional information regarding fingerprinting may be found on the SBEC website.
- Once the review of transcripts is completed, the candidate will be notified by TEA of the appropriate 8-12 TExES content exam for which to register, in addition to the 8-12 PPR.
STEP TWO
- Upon notification of eligibility and the appropriate TExES content exam, the candidate may then register with Educational Testing Service (ETS) for the 8-12 content area exam and 8-12 PPR exam.
- Candidates taking the FCS - Hospitality, Nutrition and Food Sciences 8-12 or FCS - Human Development and Family Studies 8-12 exam must register through the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
STEP THREE
- To receive the TTC, a candidate must secure employment with and be recommended by an approved Texas school district and complete all requirements as outlined in rule. The candidate should make sure that the school district has an SBEC approved Preparation, Mentoring and Support Plan in place.
STEP FOUR
- Upon successful completion of two years of successful continuous employment on the Temporary Teacher Certificate and after all requirements have been met the candidate may apply to TEA for a Standard Certificate. The Standard Certificate can then be issued upon the recommendation of the employing school district(s).
