T-STEM Teacher Pre-Service Program (UTeach)
The T-STEM Pre-service Teacher Preparation Program funds the replication of a successful teacher preparation program, UTeach, which is based at the University of Texas at Austin.
With over a decade of proven results, UTeach offers degree programs that allow students to graduate in four years, completing a math, science, or computer science degree and all of the requirements for secondary teacher certification.
- An institution of higher education with the capability to replicate a proven math and science teacher preparation program across the state.
- 80% of UTeach teachers projected to stay in the teaching career for at least five years after they graduate.
- Estimated 280,000 secondary level students served by UTeach graduates to date.
- All UTeach graduates have taken at least 24 credit hours of mathematics or science content, and 85% earn mathematics or science degrees in their major.
- 92% of those certified are immediately hired as mathematics or science teachers.
- 82% of UTeach graduate hires are still teaching after five years, compared with fewer than 65% nationally (Schools and Staffing Survey, 2004).
- About 45% of UTeach graduates teach in schools where 40% or more of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches.
- As of fall 2011, there were over 1,500 students enrolled in UTeach with STEM majors at the Texas replication sites.

- FY 2008 - Cycle 2 (October 1, 2007 - August 31, 2009) - $1,700,000
- FY 2009 - Cycle 3 (August 1, 2009 - May 31, 2011) - $1,500,000
- FY 2011 - Cycle 4 (June 1, 2011 - May 31, 2013) - $1,000,000
No additional funding was appropriated in the 2012-2013 biennium.
