The Best Practices in Dropout Prevention study was a requirement of House Bill 2237, passed by the Texas Legislature in 2007. The National Dropout Prevention Center/Network and Communities In Schools collaborated in 2007 to publish the study Dropout Risk Factors and Exemplary Programs: A Technical Report.The report “finds that there are multiple risk factors which increase the likelihood that students will drop out. The evidence clearly shows that dropout is always the result of a long process of disengagement that sometimes begins before the child enrolls in kindergarten. The report also provides information on 50 programs that were found to be effective in addressing these risk factors.”
The National High School Center, based at the American Institutes for Research, provides the latest research, user-friendly tools and products, and high-quality technical assistance on high school improvement issues.
Based on a national survey of teachers and principals, the report by Civic Enterprises and funded by the AT&T Foundation reveals among other top-line findings that less than one-third of teachers believe schools should expect all students to meet high academic standards, graduate with the skills to do college-level work, and provide extra support to struggling students to help them meet those standards. And while a majority of teachers also feels that there should be additional resources and supports for students, the report identifies a clear expectations gap between staff and students. In Civic Enterprises 2006 Silent Epidemic report, two-thirds of dropouts surveyed said they would have worked harder if more were demanded of them.

The Secondary School Completion and Dropouts in Texas Public Schools report provides information about state dropout rates and related information, including summaries on dropout and completion rate calculations.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) Best Practices Clearinghouse was established by House Bill 1 in the 79th Legislature. The Clearinghouse features best practice summaries collected from campuses, districts, and charter schools that have documented improvement in student performance and/or school operations.
The Silent Epidemic
Dropout prevention resources for parents, educators, policymakers and students.
The purpose of the program is to support effective, sustainable and coordinated dropout prevention and reentry programs in high schools with annual dropout rates that exceed their state average annual dropout rate. Middle schools that have students who continue on to these high schools also are supported. The program provides grants to state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) to support school dropout prevention and re-entry efforts.
