The purpose of the Mathematics Instructional Coaches Pilot Program is to provide assistance in developing the content knowledge and instructional expertise of secondary mathematics teachers. Eligible districts may contract with an approved service provider for this professional development.
A school district or open-enrollment charter in Texas is eligible for the current cycle (Cycle 3) if it meets either of the following requirements:
- 60% or more of students enrolled in the district are identified as being economically disadvantaged for each of the preceding three school years
- 70% or less of students across secondary grade levels met the state standard on the first administration of the mathematics Texas Assessment of Knowledge and skills for each of the three preceding school years
- Districts served: 98
- Teachers participating: 1,598
- Number of students served: approximately 160,000
- Districts use grant funds to obtain services from an approved service provider for intensive instructional coaching and professional development for secondary mathematics teachers.
External evaluation conducted by ICF, International. Interim report to Legislature is due January 2011. Preliminary findings indicate:
- Increased classroom use by participating teachers of learned mathematics content knowledge and instructional strategies.
- Strong partnership between the Approved Service Provider and the school district led to a smooth implementation process.
- Successful campus administrator buy-in facilitated successful program implementation.
Funding for FY 2011 was eliminated as a result of the five percent reduction exercise.
