The purpose of the Grants for Student Clubs is to provide structured and purposeful extra-curricular, after school, summer, and related programs offering effective strategies to reduce the dropout rate and increase student success.
The pilot program funded a wide variety of clubs that fell into the following two general categories of academic or co-curricular clubs:
- Academic clubs that are directly related to subjects taught as part of the foundation curriculum such as a math, science, or reading clubs
- Co-curricular clubs that focus on special topics and/or areas of particular interest to students that have a clear but indirect relationship to the curriculum, such as environmental issues, robotics, or creative writing.
A school districts and open-enrollment charter school was eligible to apply if at least 70% of the students enrolled were identified as economically disadvantaged for each of the preceding three school years.
