Approval for Substitution of Instructional Materials

STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: ACTION

SUMMARY:
One publisher has requested approval for a substitution. The Math Learning Center is requesting to substitute a newer version of its currently adopted Mathematics, Grade 5, Elementary School product entitled Texas Bridges in Mathematics, with a new version, Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 5. This request for a substitution has been reviewed by the appropriate curriculum subject-area specialists and the material has been found to be a suitable substitution for use in the same classroom
as the currently adopted version.

STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §31.022, and 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §66.75.

PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: Instructional materials from The Math Learning Center were adopted in November 2007 under Proclamation 2005.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: The Math Learning Center published Texas Bridges in Mathematics instructional materials. The State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted these materials in November 2007.

This request for a substitution has been reviewed by the appropriate curriculum subject area-specialists and the materials were found to be consistent in coverage of the essential knowledge and skills. In addition, they were found to be suitable substitutions for use in the same classrooms along with the currently adopted version.

FISCAL IMPACT: None.

PUBLIC AND STUDENT BENEFIT: Product substitutions provide updated student and teacher editions.

PROCEDURAL AND REPORTING IMPLICATIONS: Indication of the substituted product will be made in the Educational Materials and Textbooks (EMAT) online system.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: None.

ALTERNATIVES: None.

OTHER COMMENTS AND RELATED ISSUES: None.

COMMISSIONER'S RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that the State Board of Education:

Approve the request from The Math Learning Center to substitute Texas Bridges in Mathematics with Bridges in Mathematics instructional materials at grade 5.
