SUMMARY: A public hearing before the State Board of Education (SBOE) is scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2011, in the William B. Travis Building, Room 1-104. Testimony will be presented regarding proposed revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 126, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Technology Applications, Subchapter A, Elementary, Subchapter B, Middle School, Subchapter C, High School, and Subchapter D, Other Technology Applications Courses.
BOARD RESPONSE: This item is presented for review and comment.
PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: The SBOE adopted the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for technology applications to be effective September 1, 1998. A discussion item regarding the proposed revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 126, Subchapters A-D, was presented to the Committee of the Full Board during the November 2010 meeting. At the January 2011 meeting, the SBOE approved for first reading and filing authorization proposed revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 126, Subchapters A-D.
FUTURE ACTION EXPECTED: Proposed revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 126, Subchapters A-C, and proposed new 19 TAC Chapter 126, Subchapter D, are presented for second reading and final adoption as a separate item in this agenda.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: Review committee members were nominated by the SBOE in November and December 2009, and individuals were notified of their appointment to serve on a committee in March 2010. Committees convened in early May 2010 to begin review of the technology applications TEKS. The review committees met again in July 2010 to complete initial drafts of the recommended revisions to the technology applications TEKS. Initial drafts of the recommendations for revisions to the technology applications TEKS were posted on the TEA website for informal feedback. Initial drafts were also reviewed by the three expert reviewers. During the September 2010 SBOE meeting, expert reviewers and representatives from the TEKS review committees provided invited testimony. The technology applications TEKS review committees met again in October 2010 to review feedback and complete recommendations for revisions to the technology applications TEKS. The recommendations from the review committees were presented to SBOE members at the November 2010 meeting and sent to the expert reviewers for feedback. Proposed revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 126, Subchapters A-D, were approved for first reading and filing authorization at the January 2011 SBOE meeting.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: Numerous comments have been received about the TEKS revision process and proposed revisions to the technology applications TEKS.
