Members: Ken Mercer, Chair; Charlie Garza, Vice Chair; Mavis B. Knight; Gail Lowe; and Michael Soto. A quorum of the State Board of Education may attend the committee meeting and discuss items on the committee agenda.

1. Recommendation for Appointment to the Lackland Independent School District Board of Trustees

This item provides an opportunity for board consideration of one appointment to the board of trustees of the Lackland Independent School District. The appointment is necessary due to the expiration of the term of office for one board member. Statutory authority for this action is the Texas Education Code (TEC), §11.352, and 19 TAC §61.2.

2. Review of Open-Enrollment Charter School Applications Removed from Consideration for Incompleteness

This item provides the Committee on School Initiatives an opportunity to review and confirm the removal of sixteenth generation open-enrollment charter school applications from consideration because of incompleteness. If an application removed from consideration by the agency because of incompleteness is determined by the committee to be complete, then the committee will direct Texas Education Agency staff to move the application forward for scoring by independent reviewers. Statutory authority is for this action is Texas Education Code (TEC), §12.101 and §12.110.

3. Update on the Current Charter Application Cycle and the Upcoming Charter Requests for Applications

This item provides staff the opportunity to update the board on the current sixteenth generation charter applicant cycle and discuss the upcoming open-enrollment charter guidelines and applications. Statutory authority is Texas Education Code (TEC), §12.101 and §12.110.
