Approval of Question and Answer Document for Proclamation 2014

SUMMARY:
Proclamation 2014 was issued by the State Board of Education (SBOE) in April 2012. The subjects and grade levels proposed for Proclamation 2014 include science, grades K-12; mathematics, grades K-8; and Technology Applications, grades K-12. Publishers were given an opportunity to ask questions at an orientation meeting held in February 2012. Publishers and other stakeholders were encouraged to submit questions regarding the TEKS, the proclamation, and the review and adoption process. The resulting question and answer document for Proclamation 2014 is presented for board approval.

STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.002 and §31.022.

PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: None.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: Following the adoptions of Proclamation 2011 and Supplemental Science instructional materials in November 2010 and July 2011 respectively, the SBOE requested that staff responses to publishers’ questions related to interpretation of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) be presented to the SBOE for approval.

FISCAL IMPACT: None.

PUBLIC AND STUDENT BENEFIT: The question and answer document for Proclamation 2014 will provide valuable information, if approved by the SBOE, to publishers submitting instructional materials for adoption.

PROCEDURAL AND REPORTING IMPLICATIONS: None.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: None.

ALTERNATIVES: None.

OTHER COMMENTS AND RELATED ISSUES: None.

COMMISSIONER'S RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that the State Board of Education:

Approve the question and answer document for Proclamation 2014.
