The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the "Nation's Report Card," is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in reading, mathematics, and many other academic subjects. NAEP, a program of the U.S. Department of Education, provides information on state and national student achievement, and how that achievement has changed over time. State assessments are conducted at grades 4 and 8. National assessments are conducted at grades 4, 8, and 12. In addition, long-term trend assessments are conducted for 9, 13 and 17 year old students every four years. For more informational about NAEP, visit http://nationsreportcard.gov/.
The No Child Left Behind Act, passed by Congress in 2001, requires that states and districts receiving Title I federal funding (to aid educationally disadvantaged students) participate in NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at grades 4 and 8. Assessments in other subject areas, and at grade 12, are optional.
