NCLB PPRA and FERPA

     
    The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 amended the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) to require the U.S. Department of Education to notify annually each state educational agency and each school district of their obligations under PPRA and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). 

    School district responsibilities under FERPA and PPRA require that the district:
    1. Annually notify parents and eligible students of their rights under FERPA;
    2. At the beginning of each school year, notify parents and students of their rights under PPRA;
    3. At the beginning of each school year, notify parents directly (mail or e-mail) of the specific activities or surveys identified in PPRA and provide an opportunity for the parent to have his or her child not participate in the specific survey or activity; and
    4. Adopt policies in consultation with parents on specific topics identified by PPRA.
