SUMMARY: This item provides the board an opportunity to consider and take action on changes to the charters of Imagine International Academy of North Texas and Imagine International Academy Williamson County.
STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §12.101.
PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: The State Board of Education (SBOE) awarded a charter to Imagine International Academy of North Texas and to Imagine International Academy Williamson County during the November 2008 SBOE meeting.
Committee members heard testimony and discussed the progress and status of Imagine International Academy of North Texas and Imagine International Academy Williamson County during the November 2009 SBOE meeting. The committee chair directed staff to include this item for discussion on the January 2010 Committee on School Initiatives’ agenda.
During the January 2010 SBOE meeting, legal counsel briefed committee members on the progress and status of Imagine International Academy of North Texas and Imagine International Academy Williamson County. The committee chair directed staff to include this item as an action item on the March 2010 Committee on School Initiatives’ agenda.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: All charters are awarded with the understanding that issues identified by staff will be satisfactorily addressed prior to the issue of charter contracts. Imagine International Academy of North Texas and Imagine International Academy Williamson County have not been issued contracts.
FISCAL IMPACT: None.
PUBLIC AND STUDENT BENEFIT: Open-enrollment charter schools provide avenues for local restructuring, flexibility, innovation, and choice for parents and students. Significant public interest exists in the process of applying for open-enrollment charter schools as is indicated by requests for applications.
