 State award honors businesses that support employee volunteerism in public schools

            AUSTIN – Applications are now being accepted by the State Board of Education for the 2011 Employers for Education Excellence (EEE) Award.

            Texas employers who encourage and support employee participation in school activities are eligible to be nominated for the 2011 award.  Applications are due by July 29.

            Any employer is eligible, including private businesses, nonprofit organizations, governmental and educational entities that have at least one employee and meet the criteria.

            Employers will be eligible to receive an award at one of three levels: bronze, silver, or gold.  Eligibility is based on the business meeting the following criteria for one of the three levels:

            Bronze: for an employer that implements a policy to encourage and support employees who attend parent-teacher conferences;

            Silver: for an employer that meets the requirements of bronze, and implements a policy to encourage and support employees who volunteer in school activities; and

            Gold: for an employer that meets the requirements of silver, and implements a policy to encourage and support employees who participate in student mentoring programs in schools.

            The program requires a business to submit an application to the Texas Education Agency.  The application form is available online.

            The application can be downloaded and mailed to the address provided, or it can be filled out online and sent in via email. Instructions on how to do so are on the application form.

            Once the application is received, the commissioner of education or his designee will review the applications and make recommendations to the SBOE regarding businesses that should receive an award and the level of recognition. The SBOE may approve or modify the commissioner’s recommendation.

             The SBOE will honor the recipient(s) with an award that includes the level of recognition and other appropriate information.

            The awards will be valid for three years.  At the end of three years, a business may reapply for the same level of recognition or for a higher level if they meet the criteria.

             The complete application must be emailed or postmarked by July 29 to: Texas Education Agency, Communications Division, Employers for Education Excellence Award, 1701 Congress Avenue, Room 2-180, Austin, Texas 78701.
