Visit the STAAR Alternate Resources webpageThe cueing and prompting terms defined by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) describe the types of additional assistance that may be needed during an assessment observation if a student is unable to proceed with the task as expected given the preplanned supports provided. This additional assistance is identified as cues or prompts and affects a student’s score. For State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness Alternate (STAAR Alternate) purposes, the terminology and definitions used for cueing and prompting must be consistent across the state to ensure standardized evaluation of student performance. The following documents provide cueing and prompting terminology and state definitions, guidance for when to cue and prompt, and clarifying information.
