Vertical scales were developed in 2009 for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) English reading and mathematics tests in grades 3–8 to meet new state legislated requirements. Vertical scales for Spanish TAKS reading and mathematics in grades 3–6 were also developed; however, grade 6 Spanish TAKS is no longer administered, meaning the current vertical scale for Spanish TAKS grades 3–5. With a vertical scale, a student’s scale score in one grade can be compared to the student’s scale score in another grade as long as the scores are in the same language and subject (for example, Spanish grade 3 reading to Spanish grade 4 reading; English grade 6 mathematics to English grade 7 mathematics).
